Safety Guideline:
Fire Safety & Candle Use Policy
At Hillside Candle, the safety and well-being of our customers are of paramount importance. We want you to enjoy our candles responsibly while minimizing any potential fire hazards. To ensure safe candle usage, we have established the following guidelines, which align with the recommendations of the National Fire Protection Association and candles.org:
1. Never Leave Candles Unattended:
A lit candle should always have someone in attendance. Never leave a burning candle alone.
2. Placement Matters:
Do not place a burning candle on or near anything that could catch fire. Maintain a safe distance from flammable materials such as furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, or any other combustibles.
3. Keep Out of Reach:
Ensure candles are positioned out of the reach of children and pets. Avoid locations where they might be knocked over or accessed by curious hands or paws.
4. Wick Maintenance:
Before lighting, trim the candlewick to approximately 1/4 inch. This helps prevent uneven burning, dripping, and flaring.
Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, or any debris.
5. Use Appropriate Candleholders:
Always use candleholders specifically designed for candle use. These holders should be heat-resistant, sturdy, and large enough to contain any melted wax or drips.
6. Burn in a Well-Ventilated Space:
Avoid drafts, vents, or air currents while burning candles. This prevents rapid or uneven burning, sooting, and excessive dripping.
7. Follow Manufacturer Recommendations:
Adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines on burn time and proper use. Typically, candles should not burn for more than four hours at a time and should cool for at least two hours before relighting.
8. Use Caution When Lighting:
When lighting a candle, use long matches or a long-reach lighter. Keep loose clothing and hair away from the flame.
9. Maintain Safe Distances:
Place burning candles at least three inches apart to prevent melting due to heat transfer or creating drafts that may cause improper burning.
10. Monitor Flame Height:
- If a candle flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly, extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wick, and check for drafts before relighting.
11. Candle Use During Power Outages:
- Exercise caution when using candles during power outages. Flashlights and battery-powered lights are safer alternatives. Never use candles during a power outage for tasks such as searching closets or refueling equipment.
12. Safe Extinguishing:
- Use a candle snuffer to extinguish candles safely to prevent hot wax from splattering.
- Never use water to extinguish a candle, as it can cause splattering and may break glass containers.
- Ensure the candle is entirely extinguished and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.
- Do not touch or move the candle until it has fully cooled.
- Avoid using knives or sharp objects to remove wax drippings from a glass holder, as this may damage the glass.
Your safety is our priority at Hillside Candle. Please follow these guidelines for responsible candle usage, and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of our candles without worry. If you have any questions or concerns regarding candle safety, please feel free to contact us.
